order of worship 11/30/08

Hey all - sorry about this, I'm reposting the order.

The other day's post was based on the wrong sermon, so I've changed things around entirely.  We may just put that order off to next week when that sermon will actually be preached.

Thanks everybody.

order of worship 12/7/08

Hey everyone -

This is a fifth Sunday, which always seems to make things interesting.

The focus of the message will be Rom 15.5-7 and will have a good deal to say about God's welcoming of us and how we should then welcome.  So, I've selected a series of songs that have a theme of God's invitation to us as strangers, enemies, and sinners.  They're about how he, in his great grace, has opened his arms to call us to himself, to be at his table.

Three of these songs are on the Worship God Live album (which is on the recommended listening list).  If you haven't yet purchased that cd or those songs - this would be a great time to do it.  They should all be familiar.

If anyone has any thoughts, questions, or suggestions go ahead and post them.

Thanks to all of you for faithfully serving the church!

drumming for worshipers

Dick and Mary (and anyone else who might be interested)
I've been listening to some stuff from this past summer's worshipGod conference.  There were some breakout seminars that I thought the two of you might find helpful and i was hoping that you could listen to them.

The first is here: right click to download

It's called "drumming for worshipers"  clearly, Mary, you're not a drummer.  But the relationship between drums and bass is so fundamental, that I think that it would be helpful for you to hear it as well.  The next is "foundations for bass players."  Both of you could benefit from that one as well, I think.  I'll try to post that one tonight.

Dick, you've been doing a great job of late.  That syncopated part that you we worked on this past Sunday was great.  The good thing about changing stuff up like that is that it can give a song a new feel that can actually serve to bring people's focus to the lyrics in a different way.  It can be really helpful.  Thanks for your commitment to practice.  I think there are some helpful, practical tips on here that might enhance the practice time that you're already spending on your instrument.  Thanks again because you are a great example of Jordan's final point in this seminar - humility.
Enjoy - and post some thoughts once you have them.

order of worship 11/23/08

Hey all -

We're going to do something a little bit different this week.  Rob and Anna DeJulia (who most of you probably know) have been coming to the church for quite a while and are increasingly becoming part of the body here.  Rob's been faithfully going through the PURSUE men's leadership course that my dad has been holding for quite a while.  They live up in north Jersey and so are not able to be with us every Sunday (though I think that they would if they could).  Both of them are skilled musicians who have served on music teams in the past - we've been blessed by having Anna fill in now and then on piano.

I've twisted Rob's arm in asking him to cover for me a few Sunday's from now when I will be visiting family, so I want to get them both involved once before that time so that they can get their feet wet.  So, I'm going to be passing the guitar over to Rob and picking up the bass instead.  Anna will be on the piano.  Both of them will be singing.

I'll still be leading, so it'll be a bit out of the ordinary - leading from bass.  But I think that it will work and that it'll be a blessing.  We can always switch things back at the last minute, if need be!

So, that said - here's the list for this Sunday morning.

David - note that Jesus Will Reign (Jesus Shall Reign) will need a new slide since there are a couple lyrical alterations.

As always, if there are any questions, just leave a comment and we'll hash them out.
Thanks again to all of you.

thoughts on sunday/cd recommendations

Hey everyone - it's been a while since I've posted some thoughts on a Sunday morning.  I wanted to do that as well as post those cd recommendations that I've been promising.

Great morning, guys.  I was really blessed by it and I believe that the congregation was as well.  I received several comments about the songs of the morning.  I missed a couple chords now and then, the piano playing was a bit shaky at moments and I changed a turn on Shelly which threw things off.  All my fault.  But at least a couple of the mistakes were "intentional" in that they were decisions that I made on the fly to let the music fall by the wayside so that we could focus on the content.  And I think that those decisions were blessed and that the musical gaps weren't met with confusion or distraction.

Brooke mentioned to me that she noticed both Mary and Dick singing during the music.  Guys, that's fantastic.  It shows me that you all aren't just playing but that you're participating in the worship and being captured by the songs that we're singing.  I really do believe that that encourages the church as a whole.  But even more than that, it makes me rejoice because I'm able to know that the Spirit is working in your hearts as we play.

Shelly, it was great to have the violin today.  Thanks for bringing it along without being asked.  It added wonderfully to the morning and I was really grateful for it.

Natsuko, thanks for your willingness to serve even when you don't feel 100% comfortable with some of the songs, and for taking the vocal suggestions that I make with a humble and willing spirit.  That shows a spirit of grace that comes only with a work of God's grace.  It's a great thing to see.

Those are the only thought that I have for this morning.  If anyone has any others to toss into the mix, please just post them as comments.

I've been promising for quite a while that I'd post a list of recommended cds that I think that EVERYONE on the team should have, should listen to, should all but memorize, should enjoy, should be challenged by, should worship to.  So, now that I've let too much time go between the promise and the keeping, here's the list.  I CANNOT recommend these cds highly enough.  They'll enhance your ability to lead on a Sunday morning and they'll enhance your everyday worship as you move through your days and weeks.  Here they are:

PSALMS by Sovereign Grace Music (click here or order through the TFC bookstore)
Come Weary Saints by Sovereign Grace Music (click here or order through the TFC bookstore)
Worship God Live by Sovereign Grace Music (click here or order through the TFC bookstore)
Our God Saves by Paul Baloche (click here or order through the TFC bookstore)

I will hold off on additional comment for the time being.  But I truly believe that your lives will be blessed by these albums and that our ministry as a team will grow in direct correlation with how many and how frequently you listen to these cds.

Enjoy!

order of worship 11/9/08

Hi all -

Here are my thoughts for Sunday.  Sorry that they're late.  I was trying to get stuff uploaded to the church ftp site but we're having website issues there so you wouldn't be able to download them anyway.  So, I'm just now getting around to getting this up for you though I had it done earlier in the week.  Sorry about that.

We'll be calling back to mind some of the thoughts of this past Sunday's message and turning the focus towards this Sunday's as well.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions - feel free to leave a comment.
