order of worship 8/31/2008

Hey all -

We're up and running.  Dianne, as it turns out, will not be around this week.  Neither will Mary.  So, Dick, it's just you and me again.

But this week we'll have vocalists.  At least Alexis and Natsuko both said that they'd be happy to chip in.

So, we're cooking with gas.

Natsuko - most of the songs that we do I'm able to post links to download the audio.  I will do so here for the ones where I have a web address.  A couple of them, however, are by Paul Baloche and are only available (as I've been able to find) through iTunes.

If anyone has any thoughts or questions about this, please let me know.

order of worship 8/31/08

Hello all

I'm really sorry that I'm so far behind.  This is a few days late and I never got around to reviewing this past Sunday.  My attention has been diverted!  But I need to get back on  track and I will be seeking to do so over the next week or so.

In the meantime, here's the list for this week.  It's going to be a very down tempo morning.  Dick, I'm think that having you on the hand drums this week would be great.  And, Mary, I think that I may actually give you the week off.  It seems to me that this week would be well suited being simply the guitar, a little rhythm and one male, one female vocal.

The theme of the message - unless it's been changed - is fasting and prayer.  So, my aim this week in scheduling was to keep a theme of dependance on God throughout - of how his work and his grace fulfill the most basic of our needs.  I hope that we can express in these songs our desire that our hearts hunger most for God and that we would gladly surrender all else.

If anyone has any thoughts as to how to make that them more pronounced, I'd love to hear them.

That aside, here's the order:

revision

A very kind word from a sister on the team today alerted me to the fact that I may have communicated poorly last evening and, as a result, put a burden on you all that I do not want to place on you.

I want you all to know that I am very aware that there are technological and logistical limitations for some on the team when it comes to downloading music.  If it's not possible to do, I do not in anyway expect you do download the music.

Inability - whether it's because you're away from your computer or because you don't have one or because you don't have certain capacities on your computer - does not in any way mean that I do not think that you will be ready to learn and to praise on a Sunday morning.  I want you there and I'm happy to teach the songs.

Rather, I think that it's clear that the more familiar we are with the music, the more we know it, the more we've embraced it, the more it has captured our hearts and turned our souls to praise during the weeks and months, the more we will be equipped to lead on a Sunday morning.  So, while I do not in any way expect a download if it can't happen, I would strongly encourage the purchase of a cd or two or three that have a lot of the songs that we do and that we will do.  There are a few cds out there that will minister to your souls tremendously.  The new Sovereign Grace Music cd PSALMS is one of those.  Already, just over the last couple weeks, as I've sung the songs in my head through the day, I've been caused to praise.  I desire that for all of you as well.

I don't say "download this" to be a burden.  I say it to be a joy.  If you can't download, I'd highly recommend buying a cd.  These things are worth far more than their weight in gold.

I've been communicating that poorly.  I'm sorry about that.  Forgive me for making a burden what was meant for worship.

Thanks for all of your service, for your understanding, and for your willingness to have me as a leader even when I prove to be somewhat ineffective at points.

He can be most clearly seen in our weakness and so I rest in Him.
thanks,
tw

order of worship for 8/17/08

Hello all -

I haven't found the time for evaluation of this past Sunday.  I'm hoping that I can do that tomorrow.  But for now I wanted to post my thoughts for this coming Sunday.

I'd like to try something a bit different this Sunday by having a very extended Scripture reading.  All of the songs that we'll be doing - as you will see - are directly focussed on praise of God for his greatness, his works, and for who he is.  "Praise to the Lord the Almighty" may change to something else before the week is through, I'll keep you posted.  But given the theme for the morning, I thought that it would be a blessing to read Psalms 145-150 in one big chunk.  So, we'll sing two songs, then have the reading before teaching a new song based on Psalm 150.

Ernie, if either you or Elliot would be able to read with a good deal of sensitivity to the emotions of the text and with energy that's appropriate for the content, it would be fantastic.  With a reading this extensive it would be great if you or he were able to put in a bit more prep time than usual.

A note that applies to this Sunday as well as others.  I've heard a few times of people listening to the samples that are up on the pages that I link to without ever downloading the full version of the song to become familiar with it.  If you're not familiar with a song, please download the full version.  Usually it costs a dollar (this week it's free).  If you are trying to maintain discipline in how you use your money and music is something that you're having to cut back on, I would be HAPPY - THRILLED to buy it for you.  I have alloted a small amount of money monthly for expenses related to ministry.   To buy a song for you that will bless you and will bless the church because you know it well is well worth it to me.  But, please, come on Sunday mornings having listened to, become familiar with, and internalized any new music rather than just listening to the sample.  I really think that this is important for us as a team and for our ministry to the church.  And I'm very confident that it will be a blessing to you.

Jake, if you could, keep me posted on the status of the technical difficulties from this past Sunday.  Any chance of you being able to play this week?  If not electric, acoustic?

That's it.
Thanks, all.  Your service is an act of commitment to God's kingdom and a humble sacrifice of time for his church.  The reward is Christ.

thoughts on Sunday 8/3/08 - from Brooke

TEch - Visuals
During worship/sermon
Things were a little crazy this Sunday.  At the last minute, we decided to try out some demo software for our visual projection.  However, about 45 minutes before the start of the service, it wasn't displaying on the wall correctly.  So we had to scrap it and go high gear to getting everything back into powerpoint.  Of course, I figured out the problem about 5 seconds after the service started, but we were already a go with powerpoint.  We'll just have to give the demo another shot this Sunday.  If anyone noticed the stressed frenzy in the booth, now you know why!

I didn't notice any visual issues during either worship or the sermon.  But I was pretty distracted from the pre-service mania, so let us know if you saw anything.

TEch - Sound
All congregational mic cues were great this week.  Great job!

The EQ for the headset mic somehow got out of whack between the 7/27 and 8/3 sermons.  Kudos to John for getting it worked out within the first minute or so.  TW and I did notice that the booth and the amps were on when we came in Sunday morning.  Does anyone know if someone used the sanctuary over the weekend?  And if someone fiddled with the board during that time?  John, I'm thinking maybe we should make note of the proper EQ for TMS (and anyone else who might speak for that matter) and check it prior to the service.  I know people's voices aren't going to be exactly the same every time, but it might make things easier if we can get it close and make minor adjustments instead of having to make major ones.  I'm actually thinking maybe there should be a checklist for each person in the booth on Sunday morning so we can make sure everything gets covered.  Thoughts on that?

Everything else was smooth sailing sound-wise as far as I can remember.  Overall mix was spot on, levels during Melanie's solo were great, didn't notice any feedback issues.

Anyone else have any input?

See you all on Sunday!

order of worship for 8/10/08

Hello all -

It's odd to have the order up before we've evaluated the last Sunday.  But because of this week's schedule for me, I wanted to get it up right away.

This week we have Alan, Janet, and Alexis.  I've selected a song during communion that will be a special music with just the three of you singing acapella (maybe me as well).  If any of you will not be able to be there or will not be singing, please let me know as soon as you know so that I can make necessary changes.  This song will really only work with if the congregation is not participating - the language is so thick that I want them to just be able to read the lyrics and listen to the beauty of the music.  So, if the three of you are not all able to make it, I'd like to change the song to one that would be more congregational.

Aside from that, everything is fairly familiar (as in done at least once recently).

Jake - I'm thinking a very understated electric will do well this week.  Most of this stuff will just have a sort of ringing single note/open chord feel to it for the electric.  The only exception will likely be "Because of you."  For that song we'll want a really clean, jangle sort of distortion.  Think (it really hurts for me to say this because the band makes me cringe) Franz Ferdinand's "The dark of the matinee" or "40 ft."  I hope that's the last time I think of that band in at least a few years.  It's the only band I could think of right off the top of my head that uses the right sound for this.  What it'll be is a muted 8th or 16th note rhythm for 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3,  then ching chicka ching (a quick down, down, up, down) on 4 into 1.  That may not make any sense, but then again, it might.  If you mess around with the chord chart (once I get it up) we can nail down the strumming patterns on Sunday AM.  Other lead/filler stuff would be good too.  "Out of the depths" will require a lot of single note open stuff.  Listen to the recording to get a good feel for it.  "Nothing but the blood" will probably just be a chunky muted power chord sort of thing on straight 8th notes.  For  "Hallelujah to my king" I'd recommend downloading Paul Baloche's original to get a feel for it - I'd love to have that lead part in there.

Mary, there's a special walking bass line during the chorus of "Because of you."  It's all roots, thirds, and fifths walking up and down between the chords.  I'll try to email you the progression - but since your bass is at church it probably doesn't matter much.  If nothing else, I'll show you Sunday morning - you won't have any trouble nailing it.  It's a lot of fun.

Okay, that's it.  Here's the order.  If there are any questions or comments, send them along.

Updated order of worship

Got a call from TW this morning and he's feeling led to change up the order a little bit.  We're going to take out "Praise God" and shift all the songs down in the order.  The first song will now be "As Long As You Are Glorified" from Sovereign Grace's Come Weary Saints album.  Look for an email from him later on today for more info about this.

Thanks for your prayers concerning his trip down to the WorshipGod conference.  From what I can tell he's having a great time!  See you Sunday!
