TEch - Visuals
During worship
I again went through each song slide prior to the service looking for errors and again didn't find any.  However, it became apparent during worship that there was one song I for sure didn't have the right lyric and another I might have the wrong one.  I should have caught this during practice time but didn't.  And now that I think about it, I'm not sure that I went back and changed them after the service, even though I took notes to do so!  I was eager to get out of the booth to say hello to people, but I think it's worth it to spend an extra five minutes in the booth after the service to read back over your notes and see if anything needs adjusted.  Remember to always make lyric changes on the master slide in the worship folder rather than in that morning's presentation so it's fixed for good.

On "How Marvelous", I did not confirm with TW if we were beginning on the chorus or the verse, so I was late getting that up when we started singing.  He had mentioned it during practice, but I didn't confirm and so ended up not being sure.  Also, on "How Deep the Father's Love For Us", I was supposed to let the ladies sing through the first verse without the lyrics up.  I did not make note of that, which is probably why I forgot!  I guess I'm still learning that taking notes during practice is key!

You may have noticed we changed up the font on the slides.  This does mean that every master file needs to be updated to the new font, which I spent some time doing Saturday and Sunday but only got about 20 done.  I'll be sending out a new template to the team for making new slides.  Jonathan, I'll try to get with you on Sunday morning to make sure you're good with how to change the slides.  Shannon and I will catch up on it at a later time.  We're hoping it makes things easier to read... any feedback on this from those of you who were out in the congregation?

I confess I did not do a good job of cuing up the the DVD prior to the service.  You may have noticed that part of the video was on the screen when it started even though it went back to the beginning.  We weren't quite sure we were going to run the video, and I waited until it was a sure thing instead of just getting it ready.

During the sermon
I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary.  Did anyone else?

TEch - Sound
The Scripture reading was perfect.  Steve adjusted the mic beforehand, and John was ready with the cue after the adjustment but before the reading.  Same for the prophecies throughout the service, except for the one where the reader held the mic instead of leaving it in the stand.  It's better to leave the mic in the stand so that we don't hear the person bumping it around or putting it back in the stand.  It's difficult for the sound tech to see the mic, so muting it before the person starts putting it back in the stand is near impossible.  Whoever's in charge of the mic, please make sure it stays in the stand

Whenever possible, the visual tech should help the sound tech with cuing the prophecy mic and others when necessary.  The visual tech has a more direct line of site down the aisle to the prophecy mic and also doesn't have to have his/her head down to look at the board like the sound tech does.  We may be working on different things, but it's still a team back there, so help each other out

One last note on sound to TW:  when you are speaking into the mic like you did after the Scripture reading, make sure you're up close to the mic.  We had you cranked up and you were really hard to hear.  John and I both thought it was because you were a bit far back.

If anyone has any other insights, feel free to add them!

sunday evaluation 6/29/08 - from tw

Hello all - a few thoughts on yesterday morning.

But before that begins, during my drive to work this morning I was struck - I couldn't tell you why - by what a blessing it is to be a part of this team with you all.  As I drove I thought back, trying to recall any infighting, bickering, ego-assertion, evidence of pride or self-centeredness, and I was happily overwhelmed to realize that I have never seen any of the above to a degree that even approached the need for intervention or correction.  What an evidence of God's grace in the individual lives on this team!  The willingness that you all have to serve with humility, to learn, to try new things, to consider your abilities as a means rather than an end - it's all very pleasant for me personally, and pleasing for our Father.  Thank you all for displaying his gracious work so clearly!

As for yesterday - all in all I think it was a decent morning.  Two new songs is always a tall order and I don't approach a task like that lightly.  Both of those songs have blessed me greatly over the last two weeks during which I've listened to each easily over twenty times.  As I've reflected on the lyrics and their simplicity and depth, it's been fantastic for me.  But at the same time, I recognize that they are not the simplest songs to sing.  They're a bit of a challenge - some awkward vocal jumps here and there.  Intuitive they are not.

But, Pat and Kate - you did a great job picking them up.  Teaching the songs to you seemed simpler than I expected it would be.  Well done - you asked good questions for the sections that needed clarification and I think the results were solid.

As for the congregation - it's hard for me to read since I have a monitor in my ear.  But it seemed as though, at the very least, the chorus of each song had caught on by the time that we finished.  I heard some feed back that it seemed as though people were responding even if they weren't able to sing comfortably.  That was encouraging.  Visually, it looked as though people were processing the music but were responding to the lyrics positively.

I want to do both songs again this coming week and I think that we can fit them in.  So, hopefully, that should solidify them somewhat.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on the songs that any of you might have.

Dick - we were in and out a few times.  Not sure what the cause might have been, but we definitely weren't tightly synced - especially on the slower songs.  If you have any thoughts about how I can more effectively establish the rhythm for you to pick up, leave a comment and let me know so that I can implement.

Vocalists sounded great - some fantastic harmonies thrown in to the mix.

I thought that my comments after the Scripture reading could have been tighter, more concise and to the point.  Perhaps they were impacted by the late hour changes to the order that I made in order to amplify the theme of the morning and direct things along the lines that I thought the Spirit was leading.  Whatever the case, I wasn't as prepared as I should have been and I think that's always evident.  Ernie - you selected a fantastic Psalm, I was blessed as I read through it, the encouragement of God's faithfulness in times of trial.  Unfortunately it didn't align easily with the theme that I thought should be prominent for the morning, which is why I changed it along with a couple of the songs that I had initially selected.  I really appreciate your ministry in faithfully selecting passages from the Lord's word to minister to his people each Sunday morning.  Ninety-five times out of one hundred I believe that they have been perfectly suited for the morning.  And I believe that the Spirit has worked through them very effectively.  I wonder if it might be possible to get them just a little bit earlier in the week.  I know that you've been very busy and that has accounted for the timing.  But changes and adjustments are so much simpler if we have 24 hours or more to work through them.  Maybe we can have a conversation about how we might achieve a schedule that would work well on all sides.  Let me know your thoughts when you have an opportunity.

Sound, from what I could tell, was solid.  John mentioned to me that it can be difficult to keep my vocals at an even level if I move too much during the songs.  It's a problem that I'm aware of - yes, I am aware of what I'm doing up there!  Usually I judge the moment to determine if I think that the song can be carried without my directly singing into the mic.  If I think that it can, I'll feel the freedom to step away and allow for some physical expression of praise.  While the joy of leading and playing praise is one that I more than happily accept as a blessing, if there is one frustration that I feel at times, it is the restriction that I cannot lift my hands, cannot clap, cannot just join in with abandon.  So, I take the moments that I can.

But that said - I want to be aware if that's not helpful.  My primary role is not necessarily to personally praise directly.  As leaders much of our praise comes in the form of leading others to praise without distraction.  We praise our Father by enabling others to praise.  So, on a Sunday morning, my primary task is not necessarily to personally engage fully in worship - it's to help the congregation do that.  If I'm not doing that I need to be aware of it.  So, if any of you have any thoughts about the pros and cons, the benefits of having a leader who displays physical expressions of worship or the drawbacks to having a leader who may display those expressions too readily, I would really appreciate the feedback.  Just leave a comment so that we can discuss.

One or two additional thoughts -

I'm hearing feedback that the blog is a helpful tool for communication and for distributing information - and I'm glad to hear it!  A couple people had some computer issues at the 11th hour this week that made it difficult to get all of the information.  So, a thought on that - the primary reason that I put the order of worship together so early in the week is so that all of us have opportunity to review the music, learn what's new, re-familiarize ourselves with the old, and mull over instrumental parts, harmonies, arrangement ideas etc.  If we do that we can come together on a Sunday morning with a bunch of team driven ideas already generated.  That can only happen if we're all listening to the stuff all week long (including those people who may not be involved in a particular week).  So, I'd like to ask that you all review the order and download the music immediately upon posting.  Then commit to listening to it repeatedly and learning it cold by Sunday morning.  It will enhance our practices and it'll bring more ideas to the table as we arrange.  On top of that - it'll help teach the congregation new songs if there are people interspersed throughout who are already very familiar with the music.

One final thing - I got a few emails from people with questions about the order, singers, technical problems, etc.  Please - post those thoughts and questions as comments here on the blog.  There's a decent chance that other people are wondering the same things.  If we can answer all of the stuff that's out there at once, it would be great.  And if no one is thinking of it at the moment, perhaps it will spark a discussion about something that we all need to think about.  So, my request is this - unless the question/request/comment is extremely personal in nature, I'd ask that rather than sending me an email you post the question/comment on the site.  From here on out, I may reply to your email asking you to do that rather than answering the question.  Then, once posted, I'll reply.  Let's take advantage of all of the opportunities the blog offers.

Thanks again everyone - it's a joy!

order of worship for 6/29/08

Hello all - you'll find the order of worship below and a link to download a printable version at the bottom of this post (right click on the link).

Sorry for the delay - it's been a busy week.

There are two - yes, a challenge, I know - new songs this week.  But I think that you all will love them.  Links to download the lyrics and the music are included in the order.

All musicians and vocalists - please download both the chord charts and the music so that you can listen to the songs and become familiar with them before Sunday.  There is a small cost for each of the songs, but I want you to have them in your possession so much that if you'd rather not spend the money, I'd like for you to download them anyway and I will gladly cover the cost myself.

The first new song will be done in a different style - most laid back, less electric - than the recording.  Next week, however, we'll go full bore on it.

If anyone has any thoughts or questions, please leave a comment and let me know.
Thanks!

I JUST LOOKED AND IT SEEMS THAT "YOU ARE GOOD" IS DOWNLOADABLE FOR FREE.  I don't know if this is a short time special so download it right away to make sure!

delayed order

Hello all -

The order of worship will be a bit delayed this week.  Between a meeting last night and getting together with care group people this evening, I think it'll probably be tomorrow before I send it out.

Apologies for the delay.

thoughts on sunday 6/22/08 - from brooke

TEch - Visuals
During worship
This morning I took my own advice and went through each song slide prior to the service looking for errors.  I didn't find any--at least none that I noticed!--but was able to take note that the version of "Holy Holy Holy" that TW was using had the updated lyrics of "who was and is and evermore shall be".  The master slide has the traditional "who wert and art and evermore shalt be".  Picking up on things like this is one of the many reasons it is important for the visual lead to be there for practice time.

Video switching went quite well this morning I thought.  The DVD from OFPLM was a surprise, but it was given to me in time to preview and make sure it worked.  Though it's not optimal to see the title screen and/or DVD controller when launching a video, it was necessary this morning because there was no lead time at the beginning of the DVD.  Some things are going to be beyond our control!  Something we haven't done in the past, but that might be helpful to do in the future is to always check with the guest speaker as soon as they arrive to see if any visual support is needed.  I might even mention this to the pastoral team so that they can convey this in their communications with guest speakers.  Thanks to John for being spot on with the sound this morning for the various cues.

During the sermon
I was in a bit of a distracted state this morning and am aware of several errors on my part.  The most obvious was putting up the wrong verse slide and leaving it up there for a while before realizing the mistake.  TMS had cut out some slides before the service but instead of deleting them from the presentation, I just made note not to use the slides and then promptly didn't pay attention to my notes during the sermon.

TEch - Sound
Ditto all TW's comments on sound this morning.  It was well mixed, and everyone could be heard.  All cues were spot on this morning as far as I could tell.

There was a slight amount of feedback during almost the entire Scripture reading, which I know was due to the fact that the reader was quite a ways back from and below the mic.  We might want to send out a general email to everyone who is part of that team and remind them to raise and lower the mic as necessary so that they are speaking directly into it. But maybe just communicating with the reader beforehand or with Steve to have him adjust it as necessary prior to the reader beginning would be better.  Sound would need to be on top of keeping the mic muted until all adjustments have been made.  Thoughts on that?

A MAJOR thank you goes out to Doug Ripley for letting us borrow his Epson projector for the past several Sunday mornings (and other events).  I discovered a helpful option on the Epson remote this morning:  A/V mute.  This effectively blacks out the screen while switching from Powerpoint to DVD and back without having to put the cover on the lens like we'd been doing before.  If we ever have to use Doug's projector again, please remember this option is available!

God-willing the projector will be re-installed tomorrow morning.  Ken Vinik and John Roberts will be taking care of that.  We're hoping that Ken Vinik can rig up a 2 or 3 foot extension rod to the mount so that the projector won't have to be tilted very much to hit the wall in the right spot.  This will also be helpful with our overheating issues as it won't be so close to the ceiling.

If anyone has any other insights, feel free to add them!

thoughts on sunday 6/22/08 - from tw

Overall I thought things were pretty solid this morning  - a couple rough points but all in all pretty solid.

I had the time constraints on my mind to the point of distraction during "Indescribable" - thinking through whether we should cut out the second verse or sing through the entire song and trying to process what time it actually was left me having entirely lost my place once or twice and transposing to the wrong key in another.  Focus!

Time was a big factor in the morning over all.  We had to drop "O for a thousand tongues" from the list in order to preserve time.  As it turns out, that wasn't even nearly enough.  I, personally, found that difficult because towards the end of "Our God saves" I found myself - both my heart and my musical sensibilities - wanting to launch forward into that joyful song.

But even having missed that one, I was please with the music overall.  I think the arrangements on "In Christ alone" and "Holy, holy, holy" came together really nicely.  We were able to build well with the flow of the lyrics.  And I think the feel for both songs was fresh - something we haven't really done before - while maintaining the reflective nature of both songs.

Sarah - I looked back at one point during the morning and noticed you engaging with the song, hands raised, and singing with joy.  It was a blessing to my heart and I think it was effective for the congregation to have your example in front of them.

Jake - solid playing again.  Particularly I thought the stuff for "Our God saves," "Holy, holy, holy" and "In Christ alone" was right where it needed to be.

Mary - thank you for your faithfulness to be at practice when your husband is laid up.  You guys have had a rough couple months, but your joyful and humble spirit is always a blessing.  And the simple foundation on the bass is very helpful.

John and I effectively communicated from across the room this morning on a few different occasions.  We haven't nailed down signals yet, but we were tuned into each other pretty well.  I think all mics were live when they needed to be (unless I missed something along the way) and the mix sounded good.  So, I think we were solid on the sound side of things.

Perhaps Brooke will have some additional thoughts on the tech side of things.

Thanks everyone for your service.  It was a great morning, even with time constraints and a certain bit of chaos thrown in.  I believe that the Lord was honored.

Everyone - whether or not you were a part of the team for the morning - toss some thoughts into the mix for us all to toss around for a while!

Projector

Praise God, we have the projector back! It may not see action this weekend as Ken Vinik and his lift are probably not going to be available, but we'll hopefully have it back in action the following Sunday.

Let's pray we don't have any more problems with the projector for a long time.

TEch - Visuals
During worship
I obviously did not review the worship slides beforehand or would have noticed an extra line in the lyrics for "O God, Our Help In Ages Past." It may be somewhat tedious to go through each slide prior to the service to check for typos and other errors, but it does need to be done. Any notes you make regarding changes to song lyric slides need to be made to the master file on the computer in the sound booth.

I also had two lapses of concentration during the worship and did not change the slide in a timely fashion. I know that I have a tendency to look away from the computer for no reason and forget to change slides because I'm singing along and I know the words by heart. Gotta stay focused!

During the sermon
We tried something new this Sunday and used a video clip from youtube.com during the sermon as part of an illustration. Thanks to TW, who helped with the lens cap while I loaded the video, the transition went quite smoothly. The picture may not have been fantastic, but it gets the job done and was quite effective. It's important to note that if you are ever running the tech side of things when we do this again, go to the site and let the video load completely prior to service rather than clicking on the link when the video is needed. This will allow for smoother play of the video clip.

TEch - Sound
Sound seemed particularly good this Sunday. It was nice to hear the aux acoustic guitar (Welcome, Jake!) nicely throughout the music without being above the singers or overpowering in another way. The vocals were also mixed quite well. TW's voice did sound a little muddled when he spoke, but that might not have had anything to do with the mixing, and more with the fact that I was up front where it was loud.

Sound booth was on top of un-muting the congregational mic throughout the service. There was, however, one minor lapse during ministry time when TW's mic was not un-muted when he started to sing.

Overall, I would say it was a pretty great morning with sound!

It seems slightly weird to be critiquing myself, so if anyone has anything that I didn't notice, please comment so we can all learn from it!

thoughts on sunday 6/15/08 - from tw

I think that for this particular morning things will be pretty much entirely positive from me.  The morning was a real blessing.

During the course of thinking through where a song would go next, I missed a chord or two along the way.  Still sometimes working out the kinks in transitions - I feel solid about 90% of the time.  Apologies to the ladies for keeping Praise to the Lord the Almighty in D.  I know that was high - though it's the key that's listed in the hymn book.  While I thought about dropping it down half a step, or a full step, I ended up choosing to leave it in D because it kept the flow moving between the first three songs more easily.

I'd like to hear feedback from any of the ladies that were either part of the team or in the congregation.  Was the key high to the point of being distracting or were you still able to engage with the song?

Shelly and Kate - the harmonies sounded good, especially on You are the Way, I thought.

Dick - rock solid through the morning, if my memory serves.  You locked in and kept the tempos steady.  Thanks for that!  I think that you can still gain some confidence to play hard - stomp on that kick drum!  Trust me, it's not nearly as loud as you think it is.  Dick, I've been so blessed by your willingness to serve, your willingness to learn, and your commitment to practice.  Your efforts and your humility are evident and it's made a huge improvement on the sound during a Sunday morning.  Thank you, sir - you're honoring your Father.

Jake - great to have you there.  I hope your schedule will allow you to be involved consistently.  it adds a great layer to the sound of the band.  Just about every one of your lead lines was nailed - some even improved on the cds, in my opinion.  And I was really encouraged by your willingness to practice on your own during the week.  The way that you were prepared on Sunday morning was an enormous help.  You set a great example on your first week involved that we all could learn from - myself included many times.

The sound, from where I was standing, sounded great.  But I really can't tell since I've got a monitor blasting in my ear.  And, obviously, I don't do much turning around to check the lyrics so I don't have anything to offer there.

I thought the video during the message was effective and the sound throughout that portion was solid.  Mics were on and at a good level for all entrances - except, the song after the sermon, but hey, the guitar was up, so we were halfway there!

All in all a solid morning.  Thanks again to everyone who was there.  It's a blessing to be serving with you.

Brooke'll have some thoughts within the next couple hours.  I've read the draft and it's valuable stuff from a tech/congregation perspective.  So, make sure to check back to read it.

one more thing...

Sorry for all the words in one evening, folks.  But I'm really excited about the possibilities here.

What I will be doing from now on is posting the order of worship here on the MuTe.  You will be able to download a printable version by clicking on a link.  What this will allow me to do is link you immediately to downloadable versions of the songs that we're doing so that if you're unfamiliar with them, you can listen to learn.  On the same page as the downloadable audio - if the song is a Sovereign Grace Ministries song - you will find downloadable chord charts and vocal lead sheets....for free.  For example, part of this morning's list would look like this:

So, this will put an end to Sunday morning copying of music....most of the time.  And it will allow you to have immediate access to the music that you're not familiar with so that you can prep and our Sunday morning practices can be more effective and efficient.

That's it.  Just wanted to share the excitement.

welcome to MuTe

Hello all!

Happy to have you here!  This is going to be a great deal, I feel sure of it.  Between the commentary, the helpful encouragements and challenges, the video, the reading and listening recommendations, the posting of the orders of worship, the followup and conversation, it's all in one place when you're ready to get the info.

I'll still be sending out emails to remind you that stuff is here - but the emails will probably only have a link attached.  One way or another, your information will be here.  Hopefully what I'll be able to do is post links to recordings of songs that you can either sample or listen to in their entirety by purchasing them for download.  Along with that will be links for the chord charts and the lead sheets so that you can print them out and bring them along with you on a given Sunday morning.

It's going to be a great resource.

I have thoughts about this morning that I will be sharing over the next couple days.  And I know that Brooke was taking some notes regarding music and tech stuff.  So, I'm sure that we'll be hearing from her shortly.

It may take a week or two to become accustomed to the format.  But once you do everything once or twice, I have no doubt that this will be a huge improvement on our past procedures for feedback and information distribution.

Thanks again everyone - looking forward to it!
