order of worship for 8/10/08

Hello all -

It's odd to have the order up before we've evaluated the last Sunday.  But because of this week's schedule for me, I wanted to get it up right away.

This week we have Alan, Janet, and Alexis.  I've selected a song during communion that will be a special music with just the three of you singing acapella (maybe me as well).  If any of you will not be able to be there or will not be singing, please let me know as soon as you know so that I can make necessary changes.  This song will really only work with if the congregation is not participating - the language is so thick that I want them to just be able to read the lyrics and listen to the beauty of the music.  So, if the three of you are not all able to make it, I'd like to change the song to one that would be more congregational.

Aside from that, everything is fairly familiar (as in done at least once recently).

Jake - I'm thinking a very understated electric will do well this week.  Most of this stuff will just have a sort of ringing single note/open chord feel to it for the electric.  The only exception will likely be "Because of you."  For that song we'll want a really clean, jangle sort of distortion.  Think (it really hurts for me to say this because the band makes me cringe) Franz Ferdinand's "The dark of the matinee" or "40 ft."  I hope that's the last time I think of that band in at least a few years.  It's the only band I could think of right off the top of my head that uses the right sound for this.  What it'll be is a muted 8th or 16th note rhythm for 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3,  then ching chicka ching (a quick down, down, up, down) on 4 into 1.  That may not make any sense, but then again, it might.  If you mess around with the chord chart (once I get it up) we can nail down the strumming patterns on Sunday AM.  Other lead/filler stuff would be good too.  "Out of the depths" will require a lot of single note open stuff.  Listen to the recording to get a good feel for it.  "Nothing but the blood" will probably just be a chunky muted power chord sort of thing on straight 8th notes.  For  "Hallelujah to my king" I'd recommend downloading Paul Baloche's original to get a feel for it - I'd love to have that lead part in there.

Mary, there's a special walking bass line during the chorus of "Because of you."  It's all roots, thirds, and fifths walking up and down between the chords.  I'll try to email you the progression - but since your bass is at church it probably doesn't matter much.  If nothing else, I'll show you Sunday morning - you won't have any trouble nailing it.  It's a lot of fun.

Okay, that's it.  Here's the order.  If there are any questions or comments, send them along.
