thoughts on sunday 6/15/08 - from tw

I think that for this particular morning things will be pretty much entirely positive from me.  The morning was a real blessing.

During the course of thinking through where a song would go next, I missed a chord or two along the way.  Still sometimes working out the kinks in transitions - I feel solid about 90% of the time.  Apologies to the ladies for keeping Praise to the Lord the Almighty in D.  I know that was high - though it's the key that's listed in the hymn book.  While I thought about dropping it down half a step, or a full step, I ended up choosing to leave it in D because it kept the flow moving between the first three songs more easily.

I'd like to hear feedback from any of the ladies that were either part of the team or in the congregation.  Was the key high to the point of being distracting or were you still able to engage with the song?

Shelly and Kate - the harmonies sounded good, especially on You are the Way, I thought.

Dick - rock solid through the morning, if my memory serves.  You locked in and kept the tempos steady.  Thanks for that!  I think that you can still gain some confidence to play hard - stomp on that kick drum!  Trust me, it's not nearly as loud as you think it is.  Dick, I've been so blessed by your willingness to serve, your willingness to learn, and your commitment to practice.  Your efforts and your humility are evident and it's made a huge improvement on the sound during a Sunday morning.  Thank you, sir - you're honoring your Father.

Jake - great to have you there.  I hope your schedule will allow you to be involved consistently.  it adds a great layer to the sound of the band.  Just about every one of your lead lines was nailed - some even improved on the cds, in my opinion.  And I was really encouraged by your willingness to practice on your own during the week.  The way that you were prepared on Sunday morning was an enormous help.  You set a great example on your first week involved that we all could learn from - myself included many times.

The sound, from where I was standing, sounded great.  But I really can't tell since I've got a monitor blasting in my ear.  And, obviously, I don't do much turning around to check the lyrics so I don't have anything to offer there.

I thought the video during the message was effective and the sound throughout that portion was solid.  Mics were on and at a good level for all entrances - except, the song after the sermon, but hey, the guitar was up, so we were halfway there!

All in all a solid morning.  Thanks again to everyone who was there.  It's a blessing to be serving with you.

Brooke'll have some thoughts within the next couple hours.  I've read the draft and it's valuable stuff from a tech/congregation perspective.  So, make sure to check back to read it.

With regard to the muted mic after the service. I need to know or be signaled if you're going to sing. Knowing me, you probably tried to signal me and I missed it. Usually you just softly play guitar or piano after the message during the prayer time. I wonder if lyrics are in order during the prayer time. Being a part of the prayer team, it is very difficult to hear standing in front of the speakers and trying to hear the prayer request spoken. We need, in my opinion, back round music enough to maintain confidentiality for the one requesting prayer, but not so loud as to create an environment of having to talk over the music. For me at least, lyrics only aggravates the issue. On one occasion, when praying for a visitor with Marybeth, I totally lost my train of thought due to the distraction from the music level coming through the speakers. I think this is an area of needed sensitivity and futher input. Please, let's hear others thoughts on this.

thanks for the thoughts john

we do need to establish a definite signal list so that we can understand each other. i did, on this occasion, attempt a signal. but we weren't connecting.

as far as the lyrics during the prayer goes, i think there are multiple possibilities.

by and large, i think the music playing without singing is the best option. but i don't think that is always the case.

after a few times where i sang by myself - not inviting the congregation to join - we got a significant amount of positive feedback from members of the congregation about how it helped to focus their personal prayers and keep them focussed during the ministry time.

i think your point is well taken for the prayer teams, however. it might be that when we do have lyrics that it would be best to stand to the side of one of the speakers. your team tends to stand, more or less, directly in front of the speaker to the right side. for the few times when there is some lyric involvement in the time, it might be best to simply move away from the speaker to prevent distraction.

i think we might be able to have it all with this particular issue, but i'd love to hear some additional feedback from others.

thoughts?

p.s.

i do think that we need to do some more thinking about the execution of the ministry time. there's some room for improvement there, in general, i think.

thoughts on that would be welcome as well.

I was in and out on Sunday, (I forgot to bring snacks with me - so I had to get soemthing) and then we were in the HFH room recording the message, so I can't really leave much in the way of productive feedback, but I'm happy to have this sight as a location for it =)

I agree that we should spend some time thinking about the overall proceedings of sunday morning as well as a signal list.

I also think that we should all start thinking about new (or old) songs to introduce to the team to bring in some greater variety, and that we should have a meeting in person to discuss these things/rehearse new songs =)

excellent - thanks for the feedback alexis!

i have a whole list of songs that are ready to be introduced. the difficulty is always spacing them out enough so that people can become familiar with them before we plow on to the next one. a couple months ago we introduced three or four new songs in pretty close proximity but i think we've gotten comfortable with all of them at this point.

so i think we're gearing up for a new season of introductions.

i want to wait, largely, until after the current series. since we're doing some different things stylistically that may be difficult for some people, i want to make it as simple as possible by having the songs be at least somewhat familiar. new styles and new songs is kind of a perfect storm for distraction. so we're looking at mid-july before the next batch of new songs comes out.
