thoughts on sunday 6/22/08 - from tw

Overall I thought things were pretty solid this morning  - a couple rough points but all in all pretty solid.

I had the time constraints on my mind to the point of distraction during "Indescribable" - thinking through whether we should cut out the second verse or sing through the entire song and trying to process what time it actually was left me having entirely lost my place once or twice and transposing to the wrong key in another.  Focus!

Time was a big factor in the morning over all.  We had to drop "O for a thousand tongues" from the list in order to preserve time.  As it turns out, that wasn't even nearly enough.  I, personally, found that difficult because towards the end of "Our God saves" I found myself - both my heart and my musical sensibilities - wanting to launch forward into that joyful song.

But even having missed that one, I was please with the music overall.  I think the arrangements on "In Christ alone" and "Holy, holy, holy" came together really nicely.  We were able to build well with the flow of the lyrics.  And I think the feel for both songs was fresh - something we haven't really done before - while maintaining the reflective nature of both songs.

Sarah - I looked back at one point during the morning and noticed you engaging with the song, hands raised, and singing with joy.  It was a blessing to my heart and I think it was effective for the congregation to have your example in front of them.

Jake - solid playing again.  Particularly I thought the stuff for "Our God saves," "Holy, holy, holy" and "In Christ alone" was right where it needed to be.

Mary - thank you for your faithfulness to be at practice when your husband is laid up.  You guys have had a rough couple months, but your joyful and humble spirit is always a blessing.  And the simple foundation on the bass is very helpful.

John and I effectively communicated from across the room this morning on a few different occasions.  We haven't nailed down signals yet, but we were tuned into each other pretty well.  I think all mics were live when they needed to be (unless I missed something along the way) and the mix sounded good.  So, I think we were solid on the sound side of things.

Perhaps Brooke will have some additional thoughts on the tech side of things.

Thanks everyone for your service.  It was a great morning, even with time constraints and a certain bit of chaos thrown in.  I believe that the Lord was honored.

Everyone - whether or not you were a part of the team for the morning - toss some thoughts into the mix for us all to toss around for a while!

A question about "Our God Saves"-- I love the song, but it feels like the time on the verse doesn't fit exactly, like we're having to scramble on the singing to fit it all in. Then when we get to the chorus it settles into a much more natural, easy rhythm. Am I missing something? Are we singing it the way it's written? We've done it enough times to be at the point where we do it all right, but I'm not convinced we have it for sure.

TW--you're right about the distraction of having to watch the time. I was also very aware of that, even though I didn't wear my watch today. But this seemed to be the exception. One thought, and I don't mean for this to be critical in any way, but the CG video could possibly have been edited more tightly and the time cut on that. John and Diane had good things to say, but the essence could have been retained, I think, in appreciably less time. Having said that, I have no idea how much time goes into the making of one of these, so am more than ready to extend grace. I do know something about how long Chad worked on his video, and can only guess how much goes into one like what we had for today. Thanks for the invesment!

Tim Bowditch get's special recognition as the first member of the pastoral team to chime in - wonderful!

I totally feel you on "Our God Saves." It has an interesting syncopation during the verse that straightens itself out in the chorus. In other words, the rhythm of the melody falls on down beats and upbeats and sometimes in between - it's not a straight 1, 2, 3, 4 or even 1, and, 2, and, 3, and 4, and. There are some triplets, some dotted eighths, etc. tossed in there.

So the answer - I think - is that yes, it has that slightly rushed feeling in spots, and yes we're doing it right. But before I say that without reservation, if you click on the link to that song during the order of worship for this past sunday you can hear the original. You don't have to download it, if you simply click on it, it'll stream for you. Have a listen to it, and if you hear anything that we may be doing incorrectly, leave another comment and let me know what it is - or tell me when I have a guitar in hand so that we can work out the kinks. I want to make sure that we're being helpful during the course of that song.

The care group video was a solid three minutes longer than average. When Brooke ran it by TMS and Steve they wanted to keep it all in there rather than trim it down. I think what may have been the best option for this Sunday would have been to bump the video to next week - or even to the end of the Summer when things were ready to kick off again for care groups.

Once the OFPLM presentation went long (all valuable stuff, if I hadn't been conscious of the time it wouldn't have seemed as though it was long or extraneous at all) and then they tossed a DVD into the mix, the CG video probably could've been slashed for the morning.

That, I think, would have been my preference rather than trimming the video down more. But some trimming probably could've been done.

Thanks for the thoughts TDB - keep them coming!
