thoughts on sunday 7/27/08 - from brooke

Let me start by making a few notes about the comments on last Sunday's review:

I think the difference in opinion on Mark's level during piano time confirms that our room may make it impossible to accurately judge the sound quality.  I literally could hardly hear TMS over the piano during the ministry time.  If TW thought it was perfect and he was sitting in the second row, then I guess it was okay.  Maybe I should avoid commenting on sound quality since it seems to depend on where you're sitting?  I think this also might have to do with the overall volume issue that Adam mentioned.  It clearly depends on where you're sitting in the room.  Pat Batchelder even came up after the service and wanted to know what we did differently since she could hear TW perfectly throughout the entire sermon.  I know that we've previously discussed paneling on the walls as the way to fix the problem, but is there anything else we can do?

TEch - Visuals
During worship
Thanks to Jonathan for serving on the computer this week.  Thanks for having everything all set and ready to go--including having the projector on :-)

A couple points to note.  One is that the slides look better aesthetically if we don't have one-word danglers.  What I mean by this is that a lyric line that's a bit too long drops one word down to the next line, and then we do another line break.  Please make looking for this part of your pre-service read-through.  If you come across that issue, try to split the line at a logical place--where you take a breath, or where there's a natural hesitation in the music.  Also, I'd like to try to keep the bylines to three lines when possible.  There may already be some songs in there with four lines, so let's try to remember to check each song from here on out to ensure that it's three lines max.  It should go

Thanks for having the DVD cued up and ready to go and for using the control panel instead of clicking on play with the mouse.  If possible, it would be even better to not see the title screen at all.  To do this you'll need to start the DVD but pause it immediately.  Not a big deal, but if we can do it, it'll look a little cleaner and save a little bit of time too!  Excellent job letting the video fade to black before pausing and hiding it.  It was a much cleaner transition.

I didn't notice any typos in the lyrics.  Great job!

During the Sermon
Not too many this week, but I did notice the same issue with the one-word dangler.  For the notes, it's best to change the size of the text box so that all the lines are relatively even.  Thanks again to Jonathan for preparing the slides--even those that weren't used.

TEch - Sound
All congregational mic cues were great this week!  Also, I noticed the same issue with sound right at the beginning that TW mentioned, but it was taken care of by the end of the first verse--kudos to John for taking care of that quickly.

I noticed a pretty consistent amount of feedback throughout worship.  Not sure if maybe TW's mic was pointed at the speaker, or maybe Amy was holding hers too close to monitor when it was down, or if Dick's drum mic was just too hot.  Any insight on that, John?  I'm pretty sure there was some during communion too when TDB was speaking.  Again, I realize I tend to be more sensitive to feedback, so if no one else heard it, then I guess just disregard my comment.

What happened with the sound on the DVD?  If I recall it was a bit late... Visual techs should make sure to remind the sound tech prior to hitting play that a DVD is going to start and sound needs to be up AND unmuted.

Thanks again to everyone who serves on the worship team and on the tech team.  Your sacrifices of time and energy make it possible for people to worship without distraction and that is a blessing beyond measure.  It's going to get a little hairy from here on out with only one person to do the tech stuff.  Remember to keep your eyes open for those with giftings we could use on our teams!

Hi Brooke, Feedback was a little from Amy, when I muted her it stopped, a little from Tim B., same deal. There's only so much high end you can EQ out of a female vocal. The feedback audible from the booth seemed very minimal and from my vantage point was brought under control quickly. I did not hear constant feedback during the service. Could be an acoustic issue with the room. We would need to hire a professional to "tune" the room. Otherwise, we would be throwing dollars at something in ignorance.
I think that Dicks mic was just right. If you were sitting right in fromt of him, he would have a louder presence due to the accoustic value of the conga's and bongos. I didn't sense any feedback from Dick. There could have been, but I couldn't hear it from the back of the room.
When Jonathan started the video clip, we had no audio, it started abruptly a second after the video showed the man speaking. I was waiting for a signal and it took a second or so to show up on the VU meter on the board. Don't know why that was. There was no "intro music or anything, what you heard was what the computor sent to me. Perhaps a computor issue, or a DVD issue.

thanks for the info. I wouldn't say I heard constant feedback, just pretty consistently throughout the morning. TW said he heard some too and figured maybe his mic was angled at the speaker poorly. anyway. I guess maybe I should stop making comments about sound since I seem to have sensitive ears???

weird about the DVD, maybe Jonathan didn't have the computer volume up? If he would read the blog, we could find out :-)
